Start your day by meeting your Madeira hiking transfer at one of the pickup points in Funchal, Caniço, or Garajau. From there, you’ll be transported directly to the trailhead for a magical sunrise at Pico do Areeiro. Witness the golden hour amidst the dramatic peaks of Madeira as the day awakens around you.

Temporary Route Adjustments

While part of the PR1 trail is currently closed, you’ll still have time after sunrise to explore the accessible section up to Pedra Rija (1.2 km, also known as the “Stairway to Heaven”) before returning to the bus.

Next, you’ll be transported to an alternative hike:

• Vereda do Larano (a scenic coastal route) OR
• PR1.2 Pico Ruivo Hike (a stunning mountain trail).

These options offer equally breathtaking experiences until the full PR1 trail reopens.

1. Vereda do Areeiro (PR1) Hike to Pico Ruivo:

Embrace a challenging yet rewarding trek to Madeira’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo. This trail offers stunning vistas and a chance to immerse yourself in the island’s unique terrain. Suitable for those seeking an adventurous hike, it’s a journey that rewards your efforts with breathtaking scenery.

2. ONLY IN WINTER OR IN CASE OF PR1 CLOSURE:
Shorter Hike from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo (PR1.2):

For a more leisurely option, the shuttle will transport you to Achada do Teixeira, the starting point for a shorter route to Pico Ruivo. This trail is perfect for those who prefer to enjoy the beauty of Madeira’s landscape without the extended trek. It’s also the alternative route when the PR1 trail is unavailable.
